Hi everyone! Welcome back to another episode of “IELTS Speaking with Chelsea”.
PART1 topic: Borrowing and Lending
This topic can be tricky because many students struggle to come up with ideas, but don’t worry—I’ll walk you through what to talk about, useful phrases and collocations, and I’ll also give you full sample answers.
1️⃣ Have you ever borrowed books from others?
⭐ Ideas brainstorming
Borrowing textbooks from classmates in school because you accidentally left yours at home .
accidentally left books at home
Borrowing novels or comics from friends to pass the time (借小说和漫画读读).
pass the time 打发时间,消磨时间
Borrowing books from a library for studying or research
Sample Answer (in English):
“Yes, I have! Back in school, I used to borrow novels and comics from friends to pass the time between classes. I always made sure to return them on time and in good condition.”
2️⃣ Have you ever borrowed money from others
⭐ Ideas brainstorming
Borrowing small amounts for snacks or transportation
Asking family for financial support during emergencies
Feeling a bit awkward asking for money
Sample Answer (in English):
“Yes, I’ve borrowed money before. It was mostly small amounts, like for snacks or transportation. I always felt a bit awkward asking, but I made sure to pay it back quickly.”
3️⃣ Do you like to lend things to others?
⭐ Ideas brainstorming
lending to close friends and family
I wouldn’t mind doing someone a quick favour but I’d be careful with valuable stuff
Wound’t mind
Valuable stuff
Sample Answer (in English):
“I’m happy to lend things to close friends or family because I trust them. But I’m more careful with expensive things, like gadgets. I think it’s important to only lend things I’m okay with not getting back.”
4️⃣ How do you feel when people don’t return things they borrowed from you
⭐ Ideas brainstorming
Feeling annoyed or let down (感到烦恼或失望).
Losing trust in that person
Thinking twice about lending to them again
Sample Answer (in English):
“Honestly, I feel annoyed when people don’t return things they borrowed. It makes me feel like I can’t trust them anymore. If it happens again, I’d probably avoid lending to them in the future.”
